Greenways Ways – Parks and Greenspace
Location of Proposed Greenway

The Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink will develop greenway linkages connecting the Greater Corktown and Mexicantown/Hubbard Communities to Detroit’s West Riverfront. These communities, fronting on the Detroit River, are bounded by West Grand Boulevard on the West, Martin Luther King Boulevard on the North, and the Lodge Freeway on the east. This project is an integral part of a riverfront greenway plan that extends along the Detroit River from Belle Isle to Riverside Park. It is part of a far-reaching greenway system, now under development, extending into Monroe County along the Detroit River and to the western suburbs along the Rouge River. Ultimately, seven Southeastern Michigan counties will be interconnected by this greenway network.

Coordination with current planning efforts on the West Riverfront and adjacent greenway planning to the north and west will facilitate enhanced public access to and along the Detroit River through and from the Greater Corktown and Mexicantown/Hubbard Communities. Likewise, Corktown’s historic district, the future Mexicantown Welcome Center and Mercado, and the residential development occurring in the Hubbard Richard and Hubbard Farms neighborhoods will become more easily accessed from the riverfront. Possibilities will be explored for linkages between neighborhood destinations such as Roosevelt Park, Dean Savage Park, Muliett Park, the newly refurbished Stanton Park, the Michigan Avenue entertainment and retail district, numerous community gardens and greenspaces, housing development occurring in the North Corktown area, and the Westside Industrial area, all of which serve thousands of Detroit residents.

The Corktown-Mexicantown GreenLink will connect with the Southwest Detroit Riverfront Greenway, which in turn connects to the Rouge Gateway Greenway. It will provide an important connection north to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the University Cultural Center Association's (UCCA) Midtown Loop. Planning of the Corktown-Mexicantown GreenLink will require coordination with the Riverfront Promenade and the Downtown Detroit Bicycle Improvement Project, all of which run alongside and provide access to the Detroit River.

This project links two significant multi-cultural neighborhoods within Detroit. It will be a tremendous step toward accelerating the revitalization of these communities and strengthening the viability of the area as a place to work, live and play.

Greater Corktown Recycles
A project of the Greater Corktown Development Corp.

The recycling process begins at home. There are simple steps that will help in making recycling become second nature. It is important that materials be rinsed and clean so pests do not become a problem. It is good to flatten cardboard, paperboard and tin cans for easier storing between drop-offs. Pull out the liners from pizza boxes so grease doesn’t attract pests or leach on to the box. Use plastic or cardboard boxes and paper bags to sort, store and transport materials. Place household batteries in plastic bags.
At the drop-off sight, all of the presorting helps the volunteers who then can place materials in the appropriate bins efficiently. At the recycling center, the process helps because materials arrive clean and orderly so that the sorting and bundling can happen without extra labor and expense.

Corktown Recicla
